A6m5 Zero Model

When the Zero was designed, pilot survivability was not forefront in the minds of its creators. Speed, armament, maneuverability-all of these characteristics were at the absolute peak of their development, but the Zero's lack of armor made it extremely vulnerable to return fire. As losses mounted, Japan simply ran out of trained pilots leaving the aeronautic engineering marvels that were the Zero firmly on the ground.

In April 1939, shortly after the first Japanese Zero began test trials, modification drawings were already taking place on the zero in the Mitsubishi design room, to keep pace with the anticipated long air war in the Pacific. After the initial superiority of the Zero over allied aircraft began to wane, due to new U.S. types being introduced, Mitsubishi was hard pressed to maintain a superiority. The introduction of the Grumman F6F and Chance Vought F4U, provided a need for more firepower, armor protection and capability led the combined companies of Nakajima and Mitsubishi to produce the A6M5 series of aircraft.

A6m5 Zero Model

This is an Eduard Models Czech painting mask for Tamiya 1/48 scale Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero Fighter model kit. Instruction sheet included. *AARON'S WORKSHOP NOTES: Eduard aircraft masks are die-cut to very high precision, and it covers the canopy, wheel, and other clear parts that require masking before airbrushing/spray painting. In our shop, we use a very sharp hobby knife and sharp-tipped tweezers to peel off the die-cut masking tape from the sheet before applying it to a part. Most of the time, the die-cut mask comes off easily, but keep a sharp hobby knife handy for those few pieces that are not cut all the way through. Eduard masks are flexible, fit very well, and offer good tight seal against paint leaking into the masked parts. Some masks are very small so a magnifying glass may be helpful. It's a great time saver especially for World War II era aircraft kits that comes with complex canopy structure and lots of clear parts that require masking. If you ever masked a Ju 87, A6M Zero, or a He 111 without using one of these express masks, you know what I'm talking about. Enjoy!

A6m5 Zero Model

No other Japanese fighter is more infamous than the A6M5 Zero or “Reisen” during the height of World War II. This fighter aircraft was designed by Mitsubishi and co-produced with Nakajima. Development of the A6M5 Zero began in 1937, with more than 10,000 aircraft built in the period between 1939 and 1945. Its lightweight, minimal armor and non-self-sealing tanks allowed it to perform exceptionally in dogfights and other aircraft missions. The A6M5 Zero was the response of the two companies to the Japanese Navy requirement for a plane to replace the Mitsubishi A5M carrier fighter. The aircraft was first assigned to the 261st Japanese Naval Air Corps on the Japanese home island of Honshu. It then went on to fulfill air defense duties for Iwo Jima Island and was eventually reassigned to the islands of Saipan and Palau.
