North American F-86 Sabre Owners' Workshop Manual: An insight into owning, flying, and maintaining the USAF's legendary Cold War jet

Sabre Jet Fighter

The North American F-86 Sabre was the first operational Allied swept-wing transonic jet fighter of the postwar era. It was flown with distinction by the USAF in the Korean War where it was pitted against the Soviet MiG-15. The centerpiece of this Haynes Manual is Golden Apple Operations’ F-86A, 48-178, the sole-surviving airworthy example of the first production Sabre A model, as well as the world’s oldest flying jet-powered aircraft.

Sabre Jet Fighter

The 51st Fighter Wing initially flew the F-80C in the Korean War, but in 1951, the 51st brought in high-scoring World War 2 ace Colonel Francis Gabreski to assume command when it converted from the F-80 over to the newly arrived F-86E. His recruits included his elite 4th Wing pilots, and by the end of the war, the 51st had two pilots who achieved the status of "Double Ace" as well as the highest scoring ace of the war, Joe McConnell. This book describes the 51st Wing's tenure with the Sabre that led to their high scoring sprees of 1953.

Sabre Jet Fighter

The entry of the United State's premier jet interceptor into the Korean War was triggered by the ever-increasing presence of the Soviet-built MiG-15 south of the Yalu River. The possibility of the USAF losing air supremacy over the Korean Peninsula was unacceptable. The 4th Fighter Wing got the call for combat in Korea. They were made up of a combination of new pilots right out of jet training and the older combat veterans of World War II vintage. This combination of pilot types wrote and re-wrote the text books on jet warfare. Of the 40 jet aces that the war produced, the 4th Wing boasted 24 of them. They also were the dominating MiG killer outfit with the USAF.

Sabre Jet Fighter

As the Korean War begins in June of 1950, Allied troops are shoved back to a small perimeter of land near Pusan. The US, desperate to save our soldiers, rushes fighters and bombers to Japan. MIG jet fighters have been spotted cruising at extremely high altitudes, fighters that our P-51's and F-80 jets are no match for in battle. Desperate to counter this threat, four of our latest F-86 Sabre Jets are flown to Japan, a feat never before attempted. They are flown by three of the best men in the Air Force and a woman test pilot and combat trainer from Nellis AFB in Nevada. Flying in combat by a woman is against all Air Force regulations but the situation in Korea is so serious, combat command overlooks the problem as an emergency solution to a critical cause. Constantly tested by the men in her unit, the challenges in the air, and the enemy, she becomes one of the early aces of the war with five planes downed before she herself is shot down over North Korea. Running for her life across the North Korean countryside, she attempts to make her way south to the Pusan Perimeter and safety with one harrowing adventure after another plaguing on her journey.

Sabre Jet Fighter

This is a memoir of flying with the Royal Air Force in war and peace during a career in military and civil aviation covering a half century. The text is filled with personal experiences, reminiscences and impressions and is written in four parts. Part One covers the years leading to the author's graduation and the winning of his RAF Wings. This is followed by action-packed stories of flying propeller-driven fighters, Spitfires and Mustangs, during and just after the Second World War. The author then tells of his unique experiences of front-line fighter operations when he flew jets with the United States Air Force during the Korean War. The final chapter covers the remainder of his RAF Service flying until retirement.

Sabre Jet Fighter

The second book in the Air Force Legends series is the North American F-86D/K/L "Sabre Dog". The importance of this single seat all-weather bomber/interceptor has been always overshadowed by the Korean War vintage F-86A/E/F series of day fighters. Production of F-86D's alone accounted for 2,506 aircraft. Although un-glamorous compared to its day fighter brother, the "Dog" was responsible for several world speed records. The F-86D/K.L will be covered in two volumes; this, the first, will cover its design, testing, and structures. The second volume will cover squadron service and markings, both foreign and domestic.

Sabre Jet Fighter - F-86 Sabre vs MiG-15: Korea 1950–53 (Duel)
F-86 Sabre vs MiG-15: Korea 1950–53

Sabre Jet Fighter

As the routed North Korean People's Army (NKPA) withdrew into the mountainous reaches of their country and the People's Republic of China (PRC) funneled in its massive infantry formations in preparation for a momentous counter-offensive in the last months of 1950, both lacked adequate air power to challenge US and UN air supremacy over both the battlefields and the logistics channels from China into North Korea. Reluctantly, Josef Stalin agreed to provide the requisite air cover, introducing the superior swept-wing MiG-15 to counter the American's straight-wing F-80 jets and to repel the United States Air Force (USAF) B-29 bomber formations that were interdicting the PRC's flow of troops and supplies into North Korea. This in turn prompted the USAF, against its conventional wisdom of retaining its first-line air-defence fighters to face Soviet air forces across the 'Iron Curtain' in Europe, to deploy its very best - the F-86A Sabre - to counter this threat. Thus began a two-and-a-half-year struggle in the skies over a corner of North Korea known as "MiG Alley."In this period, the unrelenting campaign for aerial superiority witnessed the introduction of successive models of these two revolutionary jets - the MiG-15bis, the F-86E, and eventually the F-86F - into combat. It also saw...

Sabre Jet Fighter - Sabre Wrath: Mig Alley Dogfights: Korean War 1950-1953
Sabre Wrath: Mig Alley Dogfights: Korean War

Sabre Jet Fighter

Sabre Wrath follows a pilot and his F-86 Sabre in the first jet v jet dogfights in the dawn of the jet era over an area which became known as Mig Alley. The Korean War was not only a landmark conflict under the guidance of the United Nations, but it was also the first serious testing ground for jet-to-jet combat. The North Korean military capacity had barely progressed past ox carts and prop planes, forcing the Communist Chinese Air Force (CCAF) to augment much of their air defense. This led to Soviet equipment, training, and personal participating in the air war, and fast-evolving jet fighters quickly complicated air combat tactics. The MiG-15s arrival in Korea, compelled the U.S. Air Force to begin deploying the new F-86 Sabre to Korea. Arriving on scene, the Sabre restored the balance to the air war. In comparison, the F-86 could out dive and out turn the MiG-15, but was inferior in rate of climb, ceiling, and acceleration. Though the Sabre was a more stable gun platform, the MiG-15's all-cannon armament was more effective than the American aircraft's six .50 cal. machine guns.

Sabre Jet Fighter

This book covers the history of the 4th Fighter Wing, from re-activation in 1946, through the end of the "short TDY" to Korea in 1957. The early history covers the entire F-80 era, including the first jet aerobatic team, and the introduction of the legendary F-86 Sabre in 1949. From daily squadron diaries, the coverage on Korea begins with the move to Korea in November 1950, through the first operations in December, including a first person account of LtCol Bruce Hinton's first MiG kill. Dozens of MiG kill reports are included in the various chapters, with another first person account of Capt Jim Jabara's fifth and sixth kills, making him the first jet ace in history. Pilots from the 4th Wing accounted for 502 of the 792 MiGs shot down in the Korean War, and had twenty-five aces of the total of thirty-nine aces crowned in Korea. Photo coverage includes most of the aces and their aircraft, maintenance, and airfield scenes. A complete list of every victory, and all the losses, is also contained. Interviews with pilots, crew chiefs, and factory tech reps tell the complete story of the "Fourth But First" before, during, and after the Korean War.
